# Virals: Liverpool ‘keeping tabs’ on Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma

As the transfer window rumbles on and rivals begin to complete some big business, [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/01/virals-new-liverpool-man-ibrahima-konate-en-route-to-the-uk/) fans will be getting increasingly anxious that places are still to be filled in the Anfield squad.

Following the untimely [departure](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/what-liverpool-players-after-gini-20786649) of Gini Wijnaldum as a free agent, Jurgen Klopp is expected to go in search of additions this summer in order to mount a charge on the major honours once again.

Whilst many have been [linked](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-wijnaldum-solutions-wildcard-transfer-20692799) with the task of replacing the Dutchman, few have come close to fruition.

Now a fresh report from Ian Doyle in the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-36m-transfer-objective-bissouma-20934490.amp), as cited by LFC Transfer Room on Twitter, has assessed the options and Brighton star [Yves Bissouma](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/28/pearce-liverpool-bissouma-interest/) comes out as the leading contender.

Lille midfielder Renato Sanches and Porto’s Otavio are two other names [linked](https://twitter.com/RudyGaletti/status/1410375675853299719?s=1006) with the Reds – however, the report would suggest there is nothing in either deal.

Bissouma, a 24-year-old [18-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/yves-bissouma/nationalmannschaft/spieler/410425/verein_id/3674) Mali international, played [36 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/yves-bissouma/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/410425) in the Premier League last season and earned an average [Sofascore rating of 7.07](https://www.sofascore.com/player/yves-bissouma/844842) in the process.

By comparison, Wijnaldum [rated 6.78](https://www.sofascore.com/player/georginio-wijnaldum/22126) whilst appearing in all 38 league games for the Reds.

[Described](https://www.brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk/sport/football/brighton-and-hove-albion/gary-linekers-exceptional-yves-bissouma-tweet-has-liverpool-arsenal-and-brighton-fans-buzzing-3198219) as ‘exceptional’ by Gary Lineker, the all-action midfielder has earned a reputation as an impressive operator at the elite level.

Valued at £22.5million and under contract until 2023 at the American Express Community Stadium ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/yves-bissouma/marktwertverlauf/spieler/410425)), any move for Bissouma would likely represent an expensive outlay.

Signing a midfield replacement [currently isn’t](https://theathletic.com/2652931/2021/06/20/neuhaus-replacement-wijnaldum-liverpool-premier-league/?source=emp_shared_article), but perhaps should be viewed as a priority this summer.

Despite the strength in Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, talented youngster Curtis Jones remains [relatively untested](https://www.premierleague.com/players/23815/Curtis-Jones/stats) consistently at the elite level.

Other options such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have simply proven [too unreliable](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/418600-jurgen-klopp-wolves-injuries-alexander-arnold-keita-oxlade-chamberlain) in terms of fitness.

Last [out injured in September 2019](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/yves-bissouma/verletzungen/spieler/410425), the Mail star would certainly seem to be a like for like replacement when it comes to availability.
