# Virals: Liverpool ‘leading the race’ to sign Denis Zakaria

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/12/01/mark-lawrenson-backs-liverpool-to-prevail-in-merseyside-derby/)are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder [Denis Zakaria](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/16/virals-liverpool-lining-up-january-move-for-denis-zakaria/).

The Reds have been [extensively linked](https://www.teamtalk.com/liverpool/denis-zakaria-transfer-pursuit-revived-inviting-midfielder-deal) with the 25-year-old previously and could now land their man as soon as January.

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are all believed to be keen on the [talented](https://www.sofascore.com/player/denis-zakaria/770677) Switzerland international but the Anfield club looks to be in prime position.

That’s according to a report from Italian outlet [Gazzetta dello Sport](https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Bundesliga/30-11-2021/zakaria-via-borussia-gladbach-gennaio-sogna-liverpool-piace-juve-roma-430220339853.shtml?intcmp=leggianche_free), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom) on Twitter.

The report claims the [40-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/nationalmannschaft/spieler/334526/verein_id/3384) star could cost as little as £6.8million in the January transfer window.

So far this season the defensive-minded midfielder – described as [‘incredible’](https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/he-reminds-me-of-kroos-seven-quotes-about-liverpool-target-denis-zakaria/) by Marco Rose – has [scored twice and provided one assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/leistungsdaten/spieler/334526) in 12 appearances across all competitions.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £24.3million and out of contract at the end of the season ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/marktwertverlauf/spieler/334526)), landing Zakaria for the mooted fee would be a bargain.

Jurgen Klopp [opted not to replace Gini Wijnaldum](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-unexpected-transfer-gini-wijnaldum-20940942) in the summer and has been hampered by injuries almost ever since.

Possessing impressive [passing and dribbling](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/252419/Show/Denis-Zakaria) attributes, Zakaria has the wherewithal to operate as a central defender, defensive midfielder and more advanced midfield option.

At the suggested asking price Liverpool should be [filling the void](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) left by Wijnaldum and signing the Swiss star as soon as the window opens.
