# Virals: Liverpool look in-house for Gini Wijnaldum replacement

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/11/noel-whelan-lauds-brilliant-liverpool-sensation-harvey-elliott/) may decide against seeking a replacement for [Gini Wijnaldum](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/13/kevin-phillips-backs-liverpool-to-sign-great-gini-wijnaldum-replacement/) in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.

Following the [departure of the Dutchman](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11820/12189637/georginio-wijnaldum-paris-saint-germain-sign-midfielder-on-free-transfer-from-liverpool) to Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent, the Reds were expected to seek a successor in midfield.

However, despite a plethora of [potential targets linked](https://www.fourfourtwo.com/features/5-midfielders-liverpool-could-sign-to-replace-gini-wijnaldum) with the role, there has been no sign of an imminent arrival.

According to a report from [The Times](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/a-revitalised-juergen-klopp-more-important-to-liverpool-than-any-potential-signing-fb0t6tkw5), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom/status/1425140197260419072) on Twitter, the hierarchy may seek a solution from within the current ranks.

The report claims that Reds boss Jurgen Klopp and lauded technical director Michael Edwards view the [return to and continued fitness](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/van-dijk-gomez-matip-return-liverpool-squad-pre-season-camp/12m7vh7ikry0e1lvh2nr1quv0s) of big names may sufficiently cover any issues.

Last season Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita managed just [23 Premier League appearances](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/player-comparison) combined whilst Wijnaldum amassed [51 outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/georginio-wijnaldum/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/49499) in total and appeared in every league game.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Although there is certainly enough quality within the [current squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) to cover almost every position, especially following the arrival of Ibrahima Konate, strength in depth counts for little when regularly sidelined through injury.

Unfortunately, both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain have spent [large periods absent](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/418600-jurgen-klopp-wolves-injuries-alexander-arnold-keita-oxlade-chamberlain) during their careers on Merseyside and have shown little sign of remaining dependable.

Albeit the likes of Harvey Elliott, Kaide Gordon and Ben Woodburn could be [waiting in the wings](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/ben-woodburn-liverpool-transfer-rumours-21272045) this season, a couple of quality additions in the market would fill Kopites with far more confidence.
