# Virals: Liverpool reportedly offer Adrian a new contract

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/16/otd-liverpool-complete-historic-treble-with-uefa-cup-glory/) have reportedly offered a new deal to backup goalkeeper Adrian to extend the Spaniard’s career on Merseyside.

The 34-year-old could be set to remain a Red for a third season having [signed as a free agent](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/359359-liverpool-fc-complete-signing-of-goalkeeper-adrian) ahead of the successful 2019/20 campaign.

This could mean young Irish stopper Caoimhin Kelleher could head out on loan – despite seemingly [moving ahead of Adrian](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/418311-caoimhin-kelleher-reaction-afc-ajax-champions-league) in the pecking order earlier this season.

According to the report from the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9582541/Liverpool-assessing-potential-goalkeeper-options-despite-offering-Adrian-extension.html), as cited by [The Anfield Talk](https://twitter.com/TheAnfieldTalk/status/1393626671572561923)on Twitter, Jurgen Klopp is assessing alternative options to the Spanish ‘keeper should he decide to move on.

One potential veteran goalkeeper mentioned as a possible incoming was Aston Villa’s Tom Heaton, however, the 35-year-old now [looks set to head back](https://metro.co.uk/2021/05/11/manchester-united-on-verge-of-completing-tom-heaton-transfer-14559503/) to Manchester United.

Remarkably, Liverpool still have the much-maligned [Loris Karius](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/03/05/loris-karius-hints-at-permanent-liverpool-exit-after-thriving-at-union-berlin/) on their books, despite the German spending the [last three seasons](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdaten/spieler/85864) away from Anfield on loan.

Adrian has made just [six appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adrian/leistungsdaten/spieler/71271) across all competitions – only three of which have come in the Premier League.

Sending Kelleher out on loan to obtain [further first-team exposure](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/caoimhin-kelleher/leistungsdaten/spieler/340918) would be a smart move from the club, were they to sign a reliable understudy to Alisson Becker.

For a goalkeeper, the Brazilian has rather a [dubious injury record](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/alisson/verletzungen/spieler/105470) and frankly, Klopp can’t be left high and dry with only Adrian as a senior understudy.

Some credit should go to Adrian, who [stepped into the breach](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/adrian-makes-debut-after-liverpool-16732284) at short notice when Alisson came off injured against Norwich on the opening day in 2019 – [becoming a hero](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11785441/liverpool-2-2-chelsea-5-4-on-penalties-adrian-saves-decisive-spot-kick-in-tense-shootout-win) in the UEFA Super Cup final against Chelsea a week later.

Performances since then have [left a lot to be desired](https://www.sofascore.com/player/adrian/50539) and allowing Kelleher to leave having usurped the [former West Ham man](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/adrian/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/71271) would be a bizarre decision, to say the least.
