# Virals: Liverpool ‘set to compete’ for signing of FC Porto ace Luis Diaz

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/11/09/virals-liverpool-ready-to-look-at-mikel-merino-as-midfield-alternative/) are reportedly ‘set to compete’ for the signing of FC Porto forward [Luis Diaz](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/29/virals-liverpool-cast-keen-eye-on-fc-porto-winger-luis-diaz/).

The Reds are believed to be [preparing to enter the market](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1505134/Liverpool-Jurgen-Klopp-Karim-Adeyemi-SNT) for attacking additions as Jurgen Klopp prepares to be without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

Both wingers [will leave Merseyside for the African Cup of Nations](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-salah-mane-keita-afcon-b1943295.html) for a prolonged period in January and Liverpool look set to struggle without their key men.

According to a report from [CalcioMercato](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/roma-luis-diaz-c-e-una-grande-insidia-61053), as cited by [Anfield Edition](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEdition) on Twitter, Diaz is a leading candidate to fill the void.

The report claims mega-rich Newcastle United and AS Roma are also keen in the [29-cap Columbian](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-diaz/nationalmannschaft/spieler/480692/verein_id/3816) whilst cross-park rivals Everton were close to the capture in the summer.

This season Diaz, who was described as [‘excellent’](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9775063/Copa-America-Luis-Diaz-nets-stunner-hand-Colombia-victory-place-play-against-Peru.html) by Juan Cuadrado, has scored [11 goals and provided two assists in 16 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-diaz/leistungsdaten/spieler/480692) across all competitions – more than Mane has [managed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/sadio-mane/leistungsdaten/spieler/200512) for the Reds.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Whilst Diaz possesses a variety of [impressive attacking attributes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/377168/Show/Luis-D%C3%ADaz) that would certainly endear Klopp to the prospect, signing a player for what would appear to be a short-term solution isn’t in the modus operandi at Anfield.

Almost exclusively [operating as a left-winger](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-diaz/leistungsdaten/spieler/480692) for club and country, the 2020/21 Copa America top marksman would offer a strong alternative to Mane during AFCON.

However, whether the Columbian is talented enough to [keep out the Senegalese ace](https://www.squawka.com/en/comparison-matrix/) long term is up for debate – especially having been [kept quiet by James Milner](https://theathletic.co.uk/2841215/2021/09/29/james-milner-just-keeps-producing-for-liverpool-wherever-he-plays-next-up-shackling-jack-grealish/) this term – and could lead to unnecessary overcrowding in one position.

Valued at £22.5million and under contract in Portugal until 2024 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/luis-diaz/marktwertverlauf/spieler/480692)), the money involved in prizing the ace away would likely be better spent on a more versatile attacking option.
