# Virals: Liverpool Sporting Director Michael Edwards ‘expected to step down’

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/30/virals-liverpools-afcon-stance-revealed-as-transfer-deadline-looms/) have been rocked this morning as sporting director Michael Edwards is reportedly expected to step down at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Regarded by many as the [genius](https://www.goal.com/en/news/liverpools-laptop-guru-michael-edwards-the-hidden-genius/1fx0rea07yt8c1pcaubwiygl32) behind some of the Reds’ most impressive recent transfer business, Edwards has become as famous amongst Kopites as many of those in the limelight.

The 41-year-old’s contract will expire next summer and it’s believed that will bring an end to a [five-year spell](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/241881-reds-appoint-michael-edwards-as-sporting-director) on Merseyside.

That’s according to a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2796473/2021/08/30/ornstein-edwards-expected-to-leave-liverpool-kounde-chelsea-deal-unlikely-arsenal-lose-coach-garry/?source=emp_shared_article), as cited by [David Ornstein](https://twitter.com/David_Ornstein/status/1432235813811757058) on Twitter.

The report claims that the [former defender](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/michael-edwards-real-story-behind-17994543) has informed the club of his ‘intention to move on’ and current assistant Julian Ward is in line to be promoted.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Albeit this current transfer window has proven to be a quiet one, Edwards’ previous [masterstrokes](https://www.90min.com/posts/6525512-every-one-of-michael-edwards-signings-at-liverpool-ranked) include the signings of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and [Georginio Wijnaldum](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/11/virals-liverpool-look-in-house-for-gini-wijnaldum-replacement/).

Big money arrivals of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker have also come under the Englishman’s watch, although it’s perhaps been the ability to extract the [maximum amount from player sales](https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/the-219million-profit-liverpool-have-made-in-sales-due-to-michael-edwards/) that has been most impressive.

Recouping £19million for Dominic Solanke ([Independent](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/dominic-solanke-liverpool-transfer-news-bournemouth-fee-add-ons-a8711596.html)) and £12.5million from the sale of Danny Ward ([BBC](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44907738)) are two standout examples of Edwards’ know-how.

Whilst all good things must come to an end and the club will have a contingency plan firmly in place, the potential departure will disappoint many Kopites.

With just over [one day remaining](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12257542/summer-transfer-window-2021-when-does-it-open-news-dates-and-deadline-day) in the transfer window, could Edwards deliver one final world-class piece of business.
