# Virals: Liverpool target Houssem Aouar reportedly available for £26m

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/11/rhys-williams-says-nat-phillips-coached-him-through-southampton-game/) midfielder [Gini Wijnaldum](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/08/virals-journalists-disagree-on-gini-wijnaldum-to-bayern-munich-prospects/) looks to have entered the final weeks of his Anfield career as the Dutchman runs down his contract.

Having been unable to agree on a new deal to stay on Merseyside, the 30-year-old could [leave on a free](https://talksport.com/football/852926/liverpool-transfer-news-georginio-wijnaldum-contract-barcelona/) at the end of the season with interest coming from around Europe.

The Reds will need to replace Wijnaldum, with the [squad’s strength in depth](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) already under scrutiny.

One man who has been [widely touted](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fans-houssem-aouar-transfer-19966666) as a possible replacement is Lyon captain Houssem Aouar.

The 22-year-old Frenchman has been [performing beyond his years](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2020/09/15/dropped-from-the-starting-xi-and-a-new-captain-mixed-news-for-arsenal-and-barcelona-over-key-transfer-targets/) for some time and could be ready to make the step into the Premier League from Ligue 1 this summer.

With funds perhaps tighter than ever [owing to the pandemic](https://www.skysports.com/football/story-telling/11095/12241988/counting-the-cost-covids-impact-on-footballs-finances), Liverpool have received a potential boost in any pursuit of Aouar this week.

It was reported in [L’Equipe](https://www.lequipe.fr/), as cited by [The Anfield Buzz](https://twitter.com/TheAnfieldBuzz/status/1391748728717983746) on Twitter, that Lyon could accept bids in the region of €30m (£26m) for their inspirational midfielder.

This season, Aouar has scored [seven goals and registered four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/houssem-aouar/leistungsdaten/spieler/395693) in 31 appearances across all competitions – earning an average [Sofascore rating of 6.86](https://www.sofascore.com/player/houssem-aouar/846081) in the league.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Holding a [market value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/houssem-aouar/marktwertverlauf/spieler/395693) of £45m, signing the [one cap Frenchman](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/houssem-aouar/nationalmannschaft/spieler/395693/verein_id/3377) for less than £30m would be a bargain deal.

Perhaps a more [attacking based player](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/322096/Show/Houssem-Aouar) than Wijnaldum – something many Kopites would say is a necessity – Aouar was [hailed](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11679/11566594/pep-guardiola-heaps-praise-on-incredible-houssem-aouar) ‘incredible’ by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola after his side were eliminated in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.
