# Virals: Liverpool target Ronald Araujo ‘rejects’ Barcelona contract

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/27/virals-liverpool-fans-dismiss-embarrassing-links-to-paulo-dybala/) target [Ronald Araujo](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/18/virals-liverpool-have-contacted-barcelona-defender-ronald-araujo/) has reportedly rejected the offer of a contract extension at Barcelona.

The 22-year-old central defender has been [linked with the Reds](https://twitter.com/TalksAnfield/status/1483139463538696192) in recent weeks and this latest update could open the door for a swoop.

[Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/tables) rivals Chelsea and Manchester United are also said to be ‘on alert’ to the situation as Araujo considers a future away from the Camp Nou.

That’s according to a report from Spanish outlet [Marca](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2022/01/25/61eff582268e3ecc028b4644.html) claiming that the Uruguay international has ‘swiftly turned down’ a contract extension with the Catalan giants.

The same report does state that the two parties are ‘expected to return’ to the negotiations as Barcelona attempt to tie down the [five-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/nationalmannschaft/spieler/480267/verein_id/3449) ace.

This season Araujo – described as [‘powerful’](https://www.fcbarcelona.com/en/football/first-team/news/2015516/pique-araujo-is-a-great-centre-back-he-has-it-all?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=fcbarcelona&utm_campaign=c5e614f8-6765-435b-a4c7-0f4fdd8aac5d) by Gerard Pique – has [scored twice](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/leistungsdaten/spieler/480267) in 16 La Liga outings.

Valued at £31.5million and under contract in Spain until 2023 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/marktwertverlauf/spieler/480267)), signing the Uruguayan would still be an expensive venture for the Reds in the summer.

Capable of [playing on either side](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ronald-araujo/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/480267) as a full-back and possessing an array of [crucial attributes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/384711/Show/Ronald-Ara%C3%BAjo) to be a top-level defender, Araujo certainly has the wherewithal to thrive in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, with the [strength in depth](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate already in situ on Merseyside, spending big on a centre-back anytime soon seems unlikely.
