# Virals: Liverpool ‘watching’ EPL midfielder John McGinn

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/02/14/virals-liverpool-named-as-suitor-for-rb-leipzig-forward-christopher-nkunku/) are once again being linked with a sensational move for Aston Villa midfielder [John McGinn](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/06/alan-hutton-not-surprised-by-liverpool-links-to-brilliant-john-mcginn/).

The 27-year-old was originally [indexed to the Reds](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/john-mcginn-price-liverpool-transfer-20884284) last year but it had appeared a lofty £50million asking price.

However, it would appear that the interest hasn’t subsided as arch-rivals Manchester United also [eye](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/man-united-john-mcginn-transfer-22818282) the Scotland international.

According to a report from [The Sunday Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/) (13/02, p74), as cited by [Anfield Edition](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEdition/status/1493139699543777280) on Twitter, Villa are hoping to tie McGinn down to a new contract in order to stave off potential suitors.

Previously a report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2525834/2021/06/22/klopp-impressed-mcginn-liverpool-prepare-life-wijnaldum/) has claimed that the interest from Anfield in the [42-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/nationalmannschaft/spieler/193116/verein_id/3380) ace was ‘very real’ despite the demands.

This season McGinn – recently labelled [‘terrific’](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-boss-steven-gerrard-22365187) by new boss Steven Gerrard – has [scored three times and provided two assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/leistungsdaten/spieler/193116) in 20 Premier League appearances.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £27million and under contract in the Midlands until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/john-mcginn/marktwertverlauf/spieler/193116)), Villa are in a strong position when it comes to the Scotsman’s future.

Having already proven to be a [top-level](https://www.sofascore.com/player/john-mcginn/250223) operator, McGinn may go on the lookout for the next step in an upwards career trajectory.

A teammate of Andy Robertson at the international level, the workmanlike midfielder [possesses a host of attributes](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/318449/Show/John-McGinn) that would endear Jurgen Klopp to the signing.

With the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita [under the microscope](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-press-conference-gauntlet-keita-oxlade-chamberlain-signs) ahead of the summer – as well as a resolution still to be found for James Milner – Liverpool could be in need of an addition and McGinn looks tailormade for this squad.
