# Virals: Liverpool ‘won’t sign’ Switzerland ace Denis Zakaria in January

Any hopes that [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/25/virals-championship-club-keeping-tabs-on-liverpool-duo/) supporters might’ve had of signing Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder [Denis Zakaria](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2022/01/21/virals-liverpool-make-serious-approach-for-denis-zakaria/) look to have been dashed by journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds had been extensively linked with a move for the 25-year-old in recent months and were billed as [‘frontrunners’](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom/status/147114115785168842?s=20) at one stage.

However, as the January transfer window approaches it’s final stages, a bargain move for the Switzerland international looks [unlikely](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1485612584636137472) to come from the Anfield club.

Seemingly available for just €7million (£5.8million), the [40-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/nationalmannschaft/spieler/334526/verein_id/3384) defensive midfielder would be a superb capture for any top European club.

This season Zakaria – once hailed as [‘extraordinary’](https://www.planetfootball.com/quick-reads/he-reminds-me-of-kroos-seven-quotes-about-liverpool-target-denis-zakaria/) by Granit Xhaka – has [scored twice and provided one assist](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/leistungsdaten/spieler/334526) in 16 Bundesliga outings.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Valued at £24.3million and out of contract at the end of this season ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/marktwertverlauf/spieler/334526)), signing the Swiss star for the mooted fees would be superb value for money.

Predominantly a [defensive-minded](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/denis-zakaria/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/334526) midfield operator, Zakaria would provide much-needed cover for Fabinho whilst also being capable of operating alongside the Brazilian in more advanced roles.

Despite all of the [up sides](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/252419/Show/Denis-Zakaria) to the capture, it would appear a late arrival on Mersyesie is now unlikely. Liverpool may hope that there is still a deal to be done in the summer with the player as a free agent.
