# Virals: Loris Karius tipped to return to Germany on permanent basis

Much maligned [Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/29/virals-fabrizio-romano-teases-liverpool-with-more-signings-promise/) goalkeeper [Loris Karius](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/10/after-90-loris-karius-shows-off-physique-weeks-before-liverpool-return/) could be set to bring a permanent end to his time on Merseyside this summer.

Since the painful [UEFA Champions League final in 2018](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/game-changer-karius-kiev-nightmare-liverpool-march-success/yn4qip173nww1xrulj8o8kea7) when the German stopper had a night to forget in Kyiv, Karius has been out on loan ever since.

An ill-fated two-year spell with Besiktas ended in [inauspicious circumstances](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52495326) before the 27-year-old headed back to his homeland for a season loan stint with Union Berlin.

Despite only making [four](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdaten/spieler/85864) Bundesliga appearances, the German [spoke of his desire](https://www.bundesliga.com/en/bundesliga/news/liverpool-loanee-loris-karius-i-can-imagine-staying-at-union-berlin-15011) to stay on in the capital.

Following the German [youth international’s](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/nationalmannschaft/spieler/85864/verein_id/3817) return in essence to the Reds, this week the [Liverpool Echo](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-can-raise-80m-selling-20697081) have reported that a permanent switch back to his homeland is the ‘most likely’ outcome, as cited by [*Anfield Effect*](https://twitter.com/AnfieldEffect/status/1398649469550436352) on Twitter.

Prior to a series of relatively unsuccessful loan spells, Karius had played [49 times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/85864) for Jurgen Klopp’s side after being signed for £5.58m from Mainz ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/transfers/spieler/85864)).

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

In truth, Liverpool have already more or less [made their money back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/transfers/spieler/85864) on the German ‘keeper and would likely take any incoming fee this summer.

With a need to sell off some deadwood and the reality sets in that Karius will never represent the Reds again, offers in the region of the players [£1.8m market value](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/loris-karius/marktwertverlauf/spieler/85864) could be welcomed.

Signed to compete with and [ultimately surpass](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/may/24/liverpool-sign-loris-karius-mainz-goalkeeper-simon-mignolet) Simon Mignolet as Liverpool number one, that night in Kyiv has haunted the stopper ever since.

In terms of a silver lining, that night meant the Reds [signed Alisson Becker](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11441825/liverpool-sign-alisson-from-roma-in-record-deal-for-a-goalkeeper) – one of the very best in the business.

Bizarrely Klopp could potentially be on the hunt for a backup goalkeeper this summer as Adrian [reportedly](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/adrian-confirms-liverpool-contract-talks-20336605) ponders whether to remain as a potential third-choice understudy.
