# Virals: Lyon confirm ‘agreement in principle’ for Xherdan Shaqiri

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/22/joe-cole-compares-liverpool-star-mohamed-salah-to-lionel-messi/) attacking midfielder [Xherdan Shaqiri](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/08/19/virals-fabrizio-romano-confirms-xherdan-shaqiri-has-an-agreement-with-lyon/) looks set to complete a move to Olympique Lyonnais early this week.

The 29-year-old has seemingly been on the brink of a switch for a number of weeks having [made it clear](https://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/premier-league/2020-2021/they-will-not-stop-me-xherdan-shaqiri-confirms-desire-to-secure-transfer-away-from-liverpool-this-su_sto8441814/story.shtml) a new challenge was necessary this summer.

Despite being someway apart following [early negotiations](https://www.football365.com/news/lyon-spend-hours-trying-attract-shaqiri-liverpool), the Reds have reached an agreement with the Ligue 1 club.

Confirmed by various reports on Twitter, the official [Olympique Lyonnais](https://twitter.com/OL_English/status/1429547470699237379) English account confirmed the transfer on Sunday evening.

The [report](https://www.ol.fr/en/contents/articles/2021/08/22/press-release) thanked the work of Liverpool General Manager, Billy Hogan, and Sporting Director, Michael Edwards whilst also confirming a medical will take place on Monday.

Northern Football Correspondent for The Times, Paul Joyce, was one of the first to [confirm](https://twitter.com/_pauljoyce/status/1429512879213010951) the agreement on social media, citing a fee of £9.5million for the [96-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/nationalmannschaft/spieler/86792/verein_id/3384) ace.

Shaqiri made [22 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/xherdan-shaqiri/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/86792) last season but hadn’t featured for the Reds in recent weeks as a move drew closer.

Receiving the mooted £9.5million and freeing up an extra squad space could see the club seek incomings – especially should other matchday [absentees](https://www.skysports.com/football/liverpool-vs-burnley/teams/446303) such as Divock Origi and Nat Phillips also leave for pastures new.
