# Virals: Melissa Reddy confirms Liverpool scout attendance at UCL clash

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/30/virals-liverpool-interested-in-bayer-leverkusen-starlet-florian-wirtz/) scouts would appear to have enjoyed a busy Wednesday night on UEFA Champions League duty.

Following [reports](https://metro.co.uk/2021/09/29/liverpool-to-scout-arnaut-danjuma-in-manchester-united-v-villarreal-15336396/) claiming that the Reds would have staff in situ at Old Trafford to watch summer target Arnaut Danjuma star for Villarreal, further members of the scouting team headed further afield.

According to reliable journalist [Melissa Reddy](https://twitter.com/MelissaReddy_/status/1443297017686593541) on Twitter, Liverpool were one of many top clubs represented at the Estádio da Luz for the UEFA Champions League meeting between Benfica and Barcelona.

> Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Leeds, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are amongst a lengthy list of clubs to have scouts in attendance at Estádio da Luz tonight

Later, Reddy [speculated](https://twitter.com/MelissaReddy_/status/1443314645255733265) that those in attendance were being treated to ‘quite a show’ by likely focus of attention, Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan forward scored twice as the Portuguese giants inflicted a [3-0 defeat](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58742035) on a sorry Barcelona side.

Previously [linked](https://theathletic.co.uk/2413609/2021/02/28/analysed-six-no-9s-that-liverpool-could-target/) with a move to Anfield, Nunez was believed to be [close to joining Brighton & Hove Albion](https://www.sussexlive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/graham-potter-darwin-nunez-transfer-5820401) during the summer.

Since then the [four-times capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/nationalmannschaft/spieler/546543/verein_id/3449) ace has made a strong start to the 2021/22 campaign, scoring [six in seven appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdaten/spieler/546543) across all competitions.

Signing Nunez would be a major coup for the Reds.

Billed as a striker of [‘understated intelligence’](https://breakingthelines.com/player-analysis/player-analysis-darwin-nunez/), the Uruguay star is made in a similar mould to Roberto Firmino and could be the ideal long-term replacement for the Kop favourite.

Predominantly a central striker, Nunez [occasionally operates from the left-hand side](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/546543) of an attacking trio for As Águias.

Valued at £18million and under contract in Portugal until 2025 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/darwin-nunez/marktwertverlauf/spieler/546543)), any deal would likely prove to be an expensive outlay, albeit a necessary one in order to suitably replace Firmino.

Whilst the Liverpool scouts were watching Nunez flourish, we can all hope they were casting a keen eye on Barcelona wonderkid [Pedri](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/08/virals-liverpool-manager-jurgen-klopp-in-love-with-wonderkid-pedri/) at the same time.
