# Virals: Report claims Liverpool ‘looked at’ James Ward-Prowse

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/09/01/virals-liverpool-confirm-sheyi-ojo-loan-departure/) reportedly ‘looked at’ Southampton captain [James Ward-Prowse](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/28/noel-whelan-tips-liverpool-to-pursue-james-ward-prowse-deal/) over the course of the transfer window.

The Reds remained relatively inactive throughout the summer following the [arrival](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/435628-liverpool-agree-deal-to-sign-ibrahima-konate-from-rb-leipzig) of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig.

That’s despite the [departure of Gini Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-liverpool/transfers/verein/31) from Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad.

According to a report from [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/liverpools-summer-transfer-window-contract-renewals-dominate-but-/2kdbd845fua91nb9lpigm65k2), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom/status/1433009441918627841) on Twitter, the Anfield club did consider a move for the 26-year-old Saints ace.

The report also claims that Liverpool also ‘explored’ the possibility of a move for Marcel Sabitzer before the Austrian [joined Bayern Munich](https://www.bavarianfootballworks.com/2021/8/24/22638667/bayern-munich-rb-leipzig-marcel-sabitzer-kimmich-goretzka-tolisso-roca-rhein-muller-booth-sane-coman) late in the window.

Capped on [eight occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/nationalmannschaft/spieler/181579/verein_id/3299) by England, Ward-Prowse ultimately signed a new five-year deal at St Mary’s over the summer ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12385477/james-ward-prowse-signs-new-five-year-deal-with-southampton#:~:text=Southampton%20club%20captain%20James%20Ward,his%20time%20at%20the%20club.)).

Last season the energetic midfielder, described as the [‘full package’](https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/18185056.southampton-boss-ralph-hasenhuttl-praises-james-ward-prowse/) by Ralph Hasenhuttl, [scored eight and registered another eight assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/181579/plus/0/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/180) in 38 Premier League outings.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Signing Ward-Prowse would’ve been a major addition to the Reds’ [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) in what was a disappointing window.

Valued at £27million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/marktwertverlauf/spieler/181579)), the Saints would’ve been rightly reticent to allow their prized asset to leave the club.

As a like for like replacement for Wijnaldum, Ward-Prowse’s [durability](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/verletzungen/spieler/181579) emulates the Dutchman’s, having also appeared in every Premier League game last term.

A set-piece expert with an abundance of top quality attributes ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/105172/Show/James-Ward-Prowse)), Ward-Prowse can also provide cover at right-back, a role that might’ve been necessary had [Neco Williams left](https://www.90min.com/posts/neco-williams-desire-to-leave-liverpool-highlights-his-determination-to-succeed-opinion) as once planned.

Albeit clearly dead in the water, for now, Liverpool would be wise to revisit the possibility as soon as January and consider Williams or [Takumi Minamino](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/minaminos-struggles-southampton-explained-hasenhuttl/ylc4tvblfvox1kfmpch15b9rn) as a possible makeweight.
