# Virals: Sheffield United keen on move for Liverpool defender Ben Davies

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/21/virals-west-ham-forward-jarrod-bowen-on-liverpool-shortlist/) defender [Ben Davies](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/10/virals-liverpool-outcast-ben-davies-determined-to-succeed-at-anfield/) could be on the move this summer having never played a competitive game for the club.

Signed from Preston North End as somewhat of an emergency measure on transfer deadline day [alongside Ozan Kabak](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/feb/01/liverpool-sign-ozan-kabak-and-ben-davies) from Schalke, the 25-year-old failed to make a single appearance during the second half of the season.

Now, having [made a first outing](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/liverpool-fans-ben-davies-starts-21100518) in a Red shirt during a 30-minute pre-season friendly in Austria, Davies faces an uncertain future on Merseyside.

That’s according to a report from the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-9808051/Crystal-Palace-enquire-Schalke-defender-Ozan-Kabak-Patrick-Vieira-admirer.html), as cited by [LFC Transfer Room](https://twitter.com/LFCTransferRoom/status/1417615003117658113) on Twitter, claiming recently relegated Sheffield United have set their sights on the centre-back.

Despite a previous report from [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/2697759/2021/07/14/liverpool-transfers-no-moves-for-saul-or-tielemans-late-summer-business-expected-as-club-target-sales/) claiming Davies wouldn’t be available for transfer this summer, this fresh report suggests that stance may have altered.

Following a move from Deepdale, the Barrow-born ace appeared on [four occasions](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ben-davies/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/257097/plus/0/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/31) on the Liverpool bench in the Premier League.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Although Jurgen Klopp and the club moreover have [said all the right things](https://metro.co.uk/2021/02/01/jurgen-klopp-speaks-out-after-liverpool-complete-ben-davies-signing-and-makes-honest-admission-14003306/) about Davies and the potential future or otherwise the defender has, ultimately it must come down to whether or not the player is going to feature.

Having failed to usurp [Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/434196-nat-phillips-and-rhys-williams-have-created-proper-careers-now) during the run-in, realistically the 6’3 ace is never going to oust Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

Therefore barring another [brutal injury-hit campaign](https://www.goal.com/en-om/news/liverpool-injuries-which-players-are-out-when-will-they/180055299z10c110h1epjsvvad) keeping Davies as a sixth or even seventh option is simply unnecessary.

Unless both Phillips and Williams are also being [lined up for moves](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/rhys-williams-liverpool-loan-move-24184266) away, perhaps an initial loan with a recall option would be the safest bet for now until returning stars can be fully assessed.
