# Virals: Southampton in ‘regular contact’ over Takumi Minamino transfer

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/28/noel-whelan-tips-liverpool-to-pursue-james-ward-prowse-deal/) are said to be in ‘regular contact’ with officials from Southampton regarding the future of forward [Takumi Minamino](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/09/virals-liverpool-begin-talks-with-southampton-over-takumi-minamino/).

The Japanese ace spent the second half of the season with the Saints after [struggling](https://www.premierleague.com/players/12322/Takumi-Minamino/overview) to break into Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Anfield.

Despite making a bright start to life on the south coast, the 26-year-old ended a temporary spell with just [two goals](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/165793/saison/2020/wettbewerb/GB1) from 10 Premier League outings.

Still regarded as part of the future on Merseyside, a report from [Hampshire Live](https://www.hampshirelive.news/sport/football/transfer-news/neco-williams-liverpool-southampton-transfer-5581668), as cited by [Anfield Watch](https://twitter.com/AnfieldWatch/status/1409474001714438147) on Twitter, has suggested there could still be a permanent departure.

The report claims that the Saints are ‘keen’ to sign Minamino, whilst also citing a possible move for [wantaway](https://www.90min.com/posts/neco-williams-desire-to-leave-liverpool-highlights-his-determination-to-succeed-opinion) Reds’ full-back Neco Williams.

Signed on the back of an impressive UEFA Champions League group campaign, featuring Liverpool, the [31-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/nationalmannschaft/spieler/165793/verein_id/3435) man was perceived as a bargain at just £7.25million ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11890345/takumi-minamino-liverpool-sign-red-bull-salzburg-midfielder)).

Things haven’t quite gone to plan, however, with the versatile forward making just [31 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/165793) for the club, scoring four and assisting two other goals.

Valued at £10.8million ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/takumi-minamino/marktwertverlauf/spieler/165793)), transfer honcho Michael Edwards will be confident of obtaining a profit on any sale of the Japanese international this summer.

Should the player want to [stay and fight for a place](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/liverpool-takumi-minamino-reveals-current-stance-future-plans) then it’s a commendable stance, albeit perhaps the wrong one in the long run.

Ultimately the deal hasn’t worked out and as [Klopp looks to bolster the squad](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-sell-11-players-millions-20264292) options, pocketing the money for Minamino looks to be the best for all parties.
