# Virals: Twitter frenzy as Virgil van Dijk counts down to pre-season

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/07/02/virals-report-identifies-odsonne-edouard-as-new-transfer-target/) central defender [Virgil van Dijk](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/06/27/virals-virgil-van-dijk-sends-liverpool-fans-crazy-with-social-media-post/) has once again been exciting Kopites on social media as pre-season fast approaches.

Sidelined since last October after [suffering a serious knee injury](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54644159) in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, the Dutchman has been working hard ever since to be ready in time for 2021/22.

Having made the [decision to miss](https://talksport.com/football/879821/liverpool-van-dijk-euro-2020-netherlands-return-date-injury/) the Netherlands’ European Championships campaign in order to focus on rehabilitation, the 29-year-old looks to be nearing a return.

As Jurgen Klopp’s charges prepare to head back to action on July 12, Van Dijk took to [Twitter](https://twitter.com/VirgilvDijk) on Friday to all but announce his own involvement.

The [38 times capped](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/nationalmannschaft/spieler/139208/verein_id/3379) Holland captain was sorely missed at Anfield last season as the Reds went on a wretched run as injuries across the board took hold of the squad.

Prior to the brutal setback, the ace [described](https://www.goal.com/en/news/van-dijk-rolls-royce-kompany-milner-man-city-liverpool/1in7c4fb43qd1qixijycuuzm0) as a ‘Rolls Royce’ centre half played just [eight times](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/139208) for Klopp’s side, scoring once in the Premier League.

Credit to Nat Phillips, Ozan Kabak and Rhys Williams for guiding the side to a remarkable [third-place finish](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table/2020) last term, but in terms of quality the returning trio, as well as the [addition of Ibrahima Konate](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/435628-liverpool-agree-deal-to-sign-ibrahima-konate-from-rb-leipzig), can’t be matched.

Likely to come back with [extra fire](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/433769-virgil-van-dijk-exclusive-interview-injury-pre-season-comeback) and determination, all being well the Dutch colossus could be a whole new animal in 2021/22.
