# Virals: Jurgen Klopp confirms Curtis Jones is unavailable for UCL clash

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/10/18/virals-european-duo-plotting-a-move-for-roberto-firmino/) manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed attacking midfielder [Curtis Jones](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/10/14/pundit-believes-jurgen-klopp-will-be-over-the-moon-after-injury-update/) won’t be in contention to feature for the Reds against Atletico Madrid.

The 20-year-old missed the emphatic victory over Watford due to a problem [picked up whilst away on international duty](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-fumes-over-curtis-21867498) with England Under 21s.

Despite taking part in the warm-up to training, journalist Paul Gorst confirmed on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/ptgorst/status/1450066566335320066) that Jones won’t be part of the squad travelling to Madrid.

Speaking [ahead of the trip](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/446605-press-conference-champions-league-atletico-jurgen-klopp) in the UEFA Champions League group stage, Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for hat-trick hero Roberto Firmino.

> Klopp on Firmino: "Massive player for our development. A key player. He connects the pieces. He got injured which wasn't helpful (in Aug) but 3 goals at the weekend was great. I am never shy to praise him. If you forgot that, go back and listen. I say nice things about Bobby."

Meanwhile, centre-back Virgil van Dijk [admitted](https://twitter.com/ptgorst/status/1450084775654473737) he still has ‘room to improve’ in order to reach previous pre-injury levels.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

Options are slowly but surely returning to the fold for Klopp.

Whilst Thiago’s and Jones’ [continued absence](https://twitter.com/ptgorst/status/1450066566335320066) is a blow, welcoming Fabinho back into the fray at least allows for essential [squad](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/team/first-team) rotation.

Following such a [dominant Premier League performance](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/446453-watch-highlights-watford-premier-league), Klopp may be tempted to persist with the triumvirate of James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita.

Back to back meetings with La Liga champions Atletico seem almost certain on paper to decide the winners of [Group B](https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/standings/) and a strong away result would be a huge boost to the Reds’ chances.
