# Virals: Virgil van Dijk continues to make steps towards a return

[Liverpool](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/17/virals-ozan-kabak-compilation-highlights-defenders-potential/) star Virgil van Dijk has given encouragement to supporters that his rehabilitation remains on the right track for a return to pre-season.

Jurgen Klopp has previously stated he expects the Dutchman, [Joe Gomez](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/04/16/virals-joe-gomez-steps-up-rehab-from-season-ending-knee-injury/) and Joel Matip to be involved as the Reds prepare to embark on the 2021/22 campaign.

Van Dijk’s latest [rehabilitation session](https://twitter.com/VirgilvDijk/status/1383433281186664461) is certainly a nod towards that time frame, as the 29-year-old begins to perform some outdoor ball work as well as strength training.

The [club’s official Twitter](https://twitter.com/LFC/status/1383433063367987203) also posted a video of the centre-back from the start of the art Kirkby training centre.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Klopp’s side have [suffered](https://www.premierleague.com/tables)in Van Dijk’s absence, albeit further compounded by season-ending setbacks to fellow central defenders Gomez and Matip.

### READ LIVERPOOL VERDICT

There’s little doubt Liverpool’s season would look wholly different were the[‘Rolls Royce’ dubbed](https://www.goal.com/en/news/van-dijk-rolls-royce-kompany-milner-man-city-liverpool/1in7c4fb43qd1qixijycuuzm0) star to have remained fit and available.

Not only does the [Dutch captain](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/virgil-van-dijk/nationalmannschaft/spieler/139208/verein_id/3379) possess stacks of quality, but also a leadership level that has been severely lacking at times this season.

In terms of his return, with just [seven Premier League games](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/match/2020-21/first-team/fixtures-and-results) remaining this term a glimpse back in Red is off the cards.

Netherlands national team boss Frank de Boer has [previously suggested](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-virgil-van-dijk-injury-23919537)Van Dijk could make this summers European Championships, although Klopp and co would be understandably reticent.
