# Virgil van Dijk given the all-clear to face Southampton

Liverpool have been handed a major boost in the news that Virgil van Dijk has been passed fit to face his former side Southampton on Friday.

Speaking ahead of the game, [as reported by Andy Hunter](https://twitter.com/AHunterGuardian/status/1113426465205436417), Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the Dutchman would be available.

There had been some suggestions that he could miss the game amid concerns about his fitness, but that no longer appears to be the case.

Despite the manner of his exit at Southampton, the Dutchman would have no doubt been keen to line up against his former employers.

Supporters will be hoping for more of the same from van Dijk after his imperious performance against Spurs at Anfield last weekend.

Liverpool will go into the game knowing what they need to do, with Manchester City in action on Wednesday night against relegation strugglers Cardiff.

Pep Guardiola’s men will be expected to win against the Welsh side, meaning they will return to the top of the table.
