# Virgil van Dijk is being “constantly injected” to deal with pain from rib injury

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is being “constantly injected” to deal with pain from his rib injury, according to Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.

Koeman told [De Telegraaf](https://www.telegraaf.nl/sport/2683919/dinsdagochtend-beslissing-over-een-of-twee-oranje-spelers) [(as cited by SportsWitness)](https://sportwitness.co.uk/van-dijk-playing-2-broken-ribs-weeks-defender-constantly-injecting-liverpool/):

> Virgil has been playing with two broken ribs for weeks and has been constantly injecting to play at Liverpool in recent weeks.

The Dutch boss also claimed that Liverpool wanted Van Dijk to miss the Netherlands’ international games but the defender was keen to be involved in the game against Germany.

> He insisted on being present against Germany. That’s great, because you want internationals who want to be here at the expense of everything. The club would have preferred him there. But he said that he wanted to play against Germany. If you get something, you also have to give something back (to the club).

In terms of his “giving something back” comment, Koeman was discussing this evening’s friendly against Belgium, which Van Dijk will miss after being sent back to Melwood early.
