# Ex-Red thinks Southampton’s £25.2m man would be perfect replacement for Gini Wijnaldum

Liverpool will likely have an action packed summer transfer window ahead of them.

Veteran midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is [set to leave the club at the end of the season](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/01/20/gini-wijnaldum-likely-to-leave-liverpool-this-summer-claims-journalist/), leaving a big void.

Plenty of players have been mooted as a possible replacement with some incredible talent mentioned.

The likes of [Houssem Aouar](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/01/liverpool-wijnaldum-aouar-transfer/) and [Florian Neuhaus](https://readliverpoolfc.com/2021/05/06/liverpool-offer-neuhaus/) have all been mentioned as heirs to Wijnaldum’s spot.

However, former Red Paul Stewart spoke exclusively to [Football FanCast](https://www.footballfancast.com/liverpool-fc-news/exclusive-pundit-claims-several-clubs-will-want-to-sign-ward-prowse-e103), highlighting his perfect replacement.

Stewart thinks Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse could definitely fit in to Liverpool’s set up.

The link initially came from BBC pundit [Garth Crooks](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56324917), with Stewart agreeing that the young Englishman would suit the Reds.

> *“I think they are two different types of players, but I like Ward-Prowse and I’ve seen his stats that show he covers the second most amount of ground during games, only behind Soucek.*
>
> *“If you combine that with the ability to put a ball on a sixpence then it makes him a highly sought–after player. So, yeah, I could definitely see him there.”*

Ward-Prowse has been at Southampton since he was a youngster, joining the academy in [2003](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/profil/spieler/181579).

The 26-year-old currently has a market value of £25.2million according to [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/james-ward-prowse/marktwertverlauf/spieler/181579).

A deal for the midfielder wouldn’t come cheap given his experience in the Premier League and his nationality.

The club captain has proven time again that he is a talented player and his loyalty to Southampton is unparalleled.

If the Reds were to try and tempt him away from his boyhood club they will need to offer a generous contract to turn his head.

Although, it would be hard for most players to turn down working under Jurgen Klopp.
