# What Liverpool sources are saying about midfield signings before transfer deadline

**Liverpool’s midfield has generated a lot of chatter on social media over the course of the summer.**

Jamie Carragher has been pretty vocal about the Reds’ frailties in this regard as he doubled down on his stance that Liverpool need new players in that position after their performance against Newcastle United.

Curtis Jones’ departure has made matters worse as Andoni Iraola reluctantly sanctioned his sale to Inter Milan.

There have been calls for midfield reinforcements before the transfer deadline, but [James Pearce of The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7534988/2026/08/25/man-utd-arsenal-liverpool-latest-transfer-real-madrid/?unlocked_article_code=1.8FA.bTq3.pj-9edaFt-FQ&source=emp_shared_article&smid=url-share-ta&source=twitteruk) suggests the Reds are focused on adding to their attack instead.

## No new midfield signings for Liverpool

An excerpt from the article reads: “Despite the clamour for midfield reinforcements, which intensified after Sunday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Newcastle, senior club sources say Liverpool’s focus remains on bolstering their attacking options out wide.

“They don’t intend to replace Jones, as they see teenager Trey Nyoni as ready to step up and play a bigger part this season.

“Unless there’s a change of stance, it’s only the forward line which will be strengthened.”

Trey Nyoni’s emergence is surely good news, but he is inexperienced on the grandest stage and needs to be able to play without the weight of expectations on his shoulders.

Not recruiting a midfielder this summer looks like a poor transfer call from the Reds as their squad is crying out for a defensive-minded player to join the likes of Dom Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.
