# Youngster Layton Stewart Signs New Deal

Layton Stewart has [signed a new contract](https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/academy/402417-layton-stewart-signs-new-contract-with-liverpool-fc) with Liverpool.

The 17-year-old forward, who has been with the Reds since the age of seven finished his first season with the U18s with 16 goals, an impressive tally given that his season was ended prematurely due to an ankle injury.

His final appearance of the fragmented season was in January, where he signed off in style with a hat-trick against Sunderland.

Blessed with natural pace and the ability to finish his chances, Stewart earned his first professional contract earlier this year.

After scoring seven goals in 13 appearances for the U18 team, his first taste of first-team duties followed as part of the youthful squad sent to Villa Park for the Carabao Cup quarter-final in December. Stewart was an unused substitute in the 5-0 defeat for the Reds on that evening.

Despite only being 17, the young forward has made numerous appearances for the Liverpool U23 side, including in the Leasing.com Trophy fixtures against Fleetwood Town and Accrington Stanley.

Breaking through at the current English, European, and World champions is never likely to be straight forward. Should he continue to develop, there certainly seems to be a bright prospect in Stewart, and he may be another of a long line of academy players produced at Melwood down the years.

It is possible we may see Liverpool continue their recent tradition of loaning out some of the emerging talents and Stewart find himself gaining valuable match experience elsewhere next season.
