It has been revealed that 20-year-old defender Joe Gomez missed Liverpool’s friendly today with Sydney FC having been sent home, after the club’s outgoing flight stopped to refuel in Thailand.
The youngster reportedly felt unwell on the first leg of the trip, and according to James Pearce, despite initially feeling okay to travel as the squad departed late Monday night. He had to be assessed by medical staff on the flight and was ruled unable to continue on the final leg of the journey.

Ironically, this was on the same day as Gomez turned 20, ensuring a miserable birthday for the talented defender in more ways than one.
Gomez had a shortened season due to injury in 2016-17, and has been linked with a £10m move to the likes of Bournemouth and Southampton, although at this stage a loan deal seems more likely.
The Reds enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory in the friendly with A-League champions Sydney; with goals from Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno, and Roberto Firmino.
