Liverpool are set to battle it out with Manchester City and Manchester United for the signature of Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Jurgen Klopp is preparing to smash Liverpool’s transfer record to sign the 22-year-old Frenchman who joined Monaco just last summer on a five-year deal from Marseilles.
However, Klopp has a stern fight on his hands with Pep Guardiola looking to raid Monaco once more, having already snatched £43million Bernardo Silva from the French side on Friday.
City are believed to be readying a bid of £39million for Mendy, with Liverpool ready to match that and eclipse their record fee of £35million paid for Andy Carroll back in 2011.
Jose Mourinho is also reported to be in the market for a top class left back and is keeping close tabs on Mendy as he looks to strengthen United’s defence ahead of the new season.
The left back position was an on-going problem for Liverpool this season, with Klopp choosing to deploy midfielder James Milner in the role ahead of out-of-favour Alberto Moreno. Moreno is expected to leave the club this summer with Liverpool looking to sign Mendy as his replacement.
Mendy played a vital role in Monaco’s defence this season, helping them to the Ligue 1 title. The defender also won his first international cap for France back in March and is now attracting keen interest from all three Premier League sides.
