Liverpool still want to sign a midfielder this summer after admitting defeat in their pursuit of Naby Keita for this summer at least, with Leipzig rejecting a £66m bid for the player and are said to be interested in Schalke’s Leon Goretzka, who is also a target Manchester City, Arsenal and Real Madrid.
Goretzka played a starring role for Germany at the Confederations Cup earlier this summer and only had a year to run on his current contract with Schalke and has shown no signs of signing a new deal.
The Reds face fresh competition for the 23-year-old this summer with Barcelona now in the race to sign him after seeing their efforts to sign Philippe Coutinho end prematurely.

It’s been suggested that Bayern Munich will look to sign the £21m-rated Goretzka next summer on a free transfer but clubs will try to secure his signature for a cut-price fee before the transfer window closes next week.
Liverpool are also worried that Emre Can may leave, with Juventus linked with a move for the former Leverkusen youngster, and a move for Goretzka could be triggered by Can’s exit.
