The Reds got off to a disastrous start and were 2-0 down after just 12 minutes, mainly due to their own terrible defending.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min capitalised on ridiculous errors from Liverpool to put the home side ahead and they had numerous chances to make it 3-0.
However, Liverpool got back into the game when they caught Kane on the ball, took it off him and Jordan Henderson unleashed Mohamed Salah who slotted home to make it 2-1.
Liverpool took the terrible Dejan Lovren off and moved Emre Can to right back and things were looking promising until injury time. Can made a mess of things in the middle of the park and had little choice than to bring Dele Alli down.
However, Alli had the last laugh as with just seconds to go, he volleyed home from the edge of the area after a poor clearance.
Ten minutes into the second half, the game was put to bed when Simon Mignolet flapped at a cross. The ball fell to Jan Vertonghen, his shot was cleared off the line but the ball fell to Kane who slotted home.
Liverpool did have a few second half chances but Hugo Lloris made some good saves.
Here’s how I rated the Reds in the game:
Simon Mignolet – 2
Didn’t cover himself in glory for the first goal as he got nowhere near he ball before Kane skipped around him. The fourth was on him too. Terrible flap that left his teammates for dead.
Joe Gomez – 6
Started at right back before moving inside. Looked comfortable in both roles. Might be worth giving him a run as a centre-back now.
Joel Matip – 4
Had an up and down game. At times he looked good but his positioning was poor at others. His header out to Alli wasn’t great for the third goal and why as a centre-back he’s not organising them better knowing Spurs have sent nobody up remains a mystery.
Dejan Lovren – 1
Absolutely dreadful. Whether he was taken off with an injury or not, he had to be removed. At fault for both goals with schoolboy-level mistakes. He gets a score because he did well to prevent Kane making it 3-0 but honestly, he was horrendous. Could be a watershed moment in his career in a Martin-Skrtel-away-at-Southampton kind of way.
Alberto Moreno – 7
Defended well and his pace bailed out his centre-backs a few times. Got forward as often as he could too.
Jordan Henderson – 5
Hardly noticed he was on the field until his ball to Salah. Christian Eriksen beat him too easily at times.
James Milner – 5
Showed his age in the build up to the second as Son completely out-sprinted him, although that’s not really his fault. Had a few moments in attack but couldn’t quite drag his team back into things.
Emre Can – 4
Dele Alli made a mug of him once too often.
Philippe Coutinho – 5
Had a few efforts, one of which was well saved. His touch and passing looked off though.
Mohamed Salah – 7
Had Serge Aurier on toast pretty much all game. Scored again and created a few more chances too, including some great skill to set up Milner.
Roberto Firmino – 5
Didn’t really get into the game at all. Was starved of service at the lead Spurs had allowed them to sit deep.
Alex Oxlade-Chaimberlain (Sub) – 7
Showed good intent and beat his man a few times. Perhaps one positive to take from a miserable day?
