Liverpool were one of a number of top European clubs including Napoli, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal to have a scout in attendance during Austria’s 2-1 win over Uruguay during the international break, and it seems we now have a clearer idea who the Reds were looking at.
The Reds sent a scout to the Ernst Happel Stadium to watch two centre-backs in particular – Austria’s Kevin Danso and Uruguay’s Jose Maria Gimenez.
Danso is a highly-rated 19-year-old defender who is no stranger to English football. The teenager spent time in the academies at Reading and MK Dons before joining the youth ranks at Augsburg on a free transfer in 2014.
He’s progressed through the ranks with the Bundesliga club and is now a first-team regular, making seven appearances this season. His club form caught the eye of the international setup who handed him his debut in September.

Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez has great experience of playing at the highest level, being a regular for club and country over the last 18 months or so.
The 22-year-old is set to become a free agent next summer when his contract expires at the end of the season and Arsenal are also interested in him.
