Liverpool U19s lose UEFA Youth League quarter final on pens

Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool U19s have been knocked out of the UEFA Youth League at the quarter final stage as they lost to Manchester City on penalties.

Curtis Jones opened the scoring for the young Reds, but a deflected strike from Lukas Nmecha five minutes later gave City the equaliser and the scored remained 1-1 throughout the 90 minutes.

Adam Lewis and Boby Adekanye were the only Liverpool players who scored their penalties, as Jones, Conor Masterson and Herbie Kane all missed their spot-kicks.

Kamil Gabara saved Ed Francis’ penalty early on but that was City’s only miss and they went through as 3-2 winners.

On the balance of play, the home side probably deserved to go through, but Liverpool did have it within them to advance to the quarter finals, and they had a few very good chances to score late on, but ultimately, they fell short and it is City who will have a chance to win the title.
