England boss Gareth Southgate has provided an update regarding Joe Gomez’s fitness after the Liverpool centre-back was forced off early in Amsterdam last night due to a suspected ankle injury, as reported by the club’s official website.
The 19-year-old’s evening ended prematurely in the first half of England’s friendly win over the Netherlands on Friday, with replays showing that the Liverpool defender appeared to land awkwardly on the ground after competing with the ball.
Gomez was unable to carry on despite his best efforts and eventually had to be replaced by centre-back Harry Maguire.
The full extent of the Reds’ centre-back injury is still unknown, with England set to assess his injury over the coming days. However, Gomez is almost certain to miss England’s tussle at Wembley with Italy on Tuesday – and could also be sidelined when Liverpool return to action once more next Saturday against Crystal Palace.
On Gomez’s injury, Southgate told BBC Sport that they would need to have a “closer look” at the extent of the blow.
We didn’t like the way he landed, he was knocked in the air. We don’t know at the moment, we need to check that.
Trent Alexander-Arnold will also be destined to take the ex-Charlton man’s place at right-back at Selhurst Park, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hoping that the injury sustained by Gomez isn’t too serious.
