How Andy Robertson has become one of the best left backs in the Premier League

When Liverpool bought Andy Robertson for £10 million in July 2017,  Reds fans thought that their club had signed merely a squad player.

However, the Scottish star has won over the hearts of the Anfield faithful with a string of first class performances that have seen him become not only one of the first names on the team sheet, but also one of the best left-backs in the Premier League.

During his first few months at Liverpool, Robertson didn’t get as many starts as he would have liked, with Jurgen Klopp preferring to play Alberto Moreno. In fact, it wasn’t until the Spaniard got injured during a Champions League game in early December that Robertson became a regular starter.

The Scotsman took his chance and has now made the left-back spot his own. He burst onto the scene during the magnificent win over Manchester City. During that game he demonstrated his relentless work ethic, buccaneering attacking play and aggressive defending.

Robertson is a constant threat down the left hand side. With his pace, direct running and phenomenal crossing ability, he has offered the Reds another dimension to their already frightening attack. However, it is his work rate that has earned him the love of Liverpool fans and the respect of former Reds stars such as Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise.

One moment in particular, when he showcased this, was against Man City where he chased down numerous City players from deep inside his own half, forcing them to play the ball all the way back to their own box – much to the delight of the Kop.

He plays on average 62.94 passes a match, showing how involved he gets down the left hand side. He’s chipped in with three assists in his time at Liverpool in the league, but that number could easily be in double digits. He is also definitely more defensively reliable than Moreno, helping keep seven clean sheets in 18 league appearances, with no errors leading to goals.

There’s no denying that the Scot has impressed this season and at only 24, he’s only going to get better. £10 million is beginning to look like an absolute bargain.
