It looks like James Maddison is going to be one of the players who Liverpool target this summer as they look to build a squad capable of winning a Premier League title.
The young Norwich City star has been linked with moves to a lot of the big clubs in England, but Liverpool are the side who seem most likely to buy him.
So, with that in mind, I had a chat with Norwich fan Dan Emery, who happens to run our sister site Read Norwich, in order to get the lowdown on the midfielder.
Were you surprised when you saw James Maddison being liked with some of the biggest clubs in the country?
Not at all. I think it’s credit to the work he’s put in this season. Playing at a high level so consistently throughout a Championship season at his age certainly isn’t easy and it’s no surprise the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham have picked up on that.
What type of player is Maddison?
I think it’s hard to pin him down to one specific role or type of player. He’s very versatile; he can play on either wing, behind a striker or in central midfield, and he adapts his play style accordingly.
When he plays centrally, he likes to drop deep, pick the ball up and create chances by playing those killer through balls.
He’s a skilful, intricate, player but he is by no means a lightweight. He’s the most fouled player in the Championship this season but he never misses a game and he works his socks off to do his defensive work and does not let any rough treatment put him off.
What are his main strengths?
I’d say his main strengths are his close control and his attitude. Everyone can see he’s incredibly gifted with the ball at his feet, but he’s a hard working player who isn’t letting all the hype get to his head.
It’s important to keep a level head when moving to a big club, so that should work in his favour if he moves to Liverpool.
What aspects of his game still need to improve?
I think he can sometimes overplay at times. He likes to play short corners and quick free kicks, when it may be better to wait and put a ball into the box.
Realistically, what do you think he’s worth in today’s market?
When you see a player like Moussa Sissoko going for £25m in the Championship, and players like Sam Clucas going for £20m, I think Maddison is well worth the £25m price tag that has been quoted. However, given our financial situation, it wouldn’t surprise me if Liverpool managed to get him for £20m by paying more money up front.
