Two late goals at the end of each half were enough to give Liverpool a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Reds went ahead late in the first half when James Milner slotted home from the penalty spot after ex-Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho fouled Mohamed Salah.
Palace went down to 10 men with around 15 minutes to go when Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Salah when he was running through on goal.
The home side pushed for an equaliser but Liverpool hit them on the counter late on as Salah played through Sadio Mane who kept his cool to beat Wayne Hennessey.
The win means that Liverpool have won their first two league games for the first time under Jurgen Klopp’s reign.
Here’s how I rated the Liverpool players in the game:
Alisson - 7
Made a decent save from a Luka Milivojevic free-kick and was the personification of cool all night. His passing was out-of-this-world too.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 6
Had a tough battle with Wilfried Zaha, he won some moments, he lost some too. His crossing was hit and miss too.
Joe Gomez - 9
He was outstanding. Showed a great burst of pace to thwart Wilfried Zaha, battled well with Palace’s target men and his positioning was top class.
Virgil Van Dijk - 10
One of the most dominant defensive displays I’ve ever seen from a Liverpool defender. Playing against Crystal Palace on a Monday night is tough but he was immense. He won so many aerial duels from long balls and just nullified the threat. Absolutely brilliant.
Andy Robertson - 5
Unusually poor on the ball in the first half with some loose passes and first touches. He had a bit of trouble defensively too, but he kept at it and didn’t give anything cheap away. Not one of his better days.
Gini Wijnaldum - 7
Played as the number six and was very, very good. His positioning was outstanding and he hurried the Palace midfielders all game.
James Milner - 7
Slotted away his penalty with ease. Worked hard to help cover on Liverpool’s right. Not always the best on the ball but he put a shift in during his 65 minutes on the pitch.
Naby Keita - 7
Showed his class with an amazing turn and through ball that Salah should have scored from. However, his sloppy pass almost saw Palace go ahead when Andros Townsend hit the bar. His drive was a key factor in Liverpool breaking lines.
Mohamed Salah - 7
Had a great opportunity to open the scoring after an amazing lobbed pass by Naby Keita but his finish let him down. Won the penalty by turning Mamadou Sakho with ease before going down after a trip. Wasn’t at his best but broke away and was likely to score until Aaron Wan-Bissaka brought him down. He also got his assist with an excellent weighted pass to set Mane through. Two assists and getting a player sent off on a poor night shows the impact he can have on a game.
Sadio Mane - 7
Had the beating of his man on a few occasions but lacked a bit of end product at times. However, he took his goal so well. It was an exceptional break and finish.
Roberto Firmino - 6
Had quite a quiet game and he didn’t look 100% fit at times but his touch was always class. Not the biggest impact but a professional display.
(Sub) Jordan Henderson - 6
Did the simple things well as he came on for Milner for 25 minutes.
