Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has been left confused by the club’s decision to offload Loris Karius to Besiktas.
The 30-year-old recently spoke to Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws and expressed his bemusement at Liverpool’s choice to loan Karius out instead of him, despite the influx of reported offers.
I haven’t been told anything since Loris left. I don’t know what my future with Liverpool looks like. We shall see what happens this week. I find it strange that Karius was loaned out, while I also had options for a loan. But for some reason that wasn’t possible.
Mignolet was believed to be a wanted man during the summer transfer window, with the likes of Napoli allegedly keen on a loan deal.
However, Liverpool took the decision to send Karius out on a two-year loan deal to Besiktas, meaning that Mignolet will now stay put and act as a deputy to the Reds’ new first-choice goalkeeper Alisson.
The Brazilian international has impressed in his first three games as a Liverpool player and it is unlikely that he will be dislodged from the starting line-up.
Mignolet has often expressed his desire to play first-team football on a regular basis, be it at Liverpool or at a club elsewhere. Despite this, though, it seems he will be forced to act as second fiddle to Alisson until January at the very least.
A keeper who was made first choice ahead of me last year gets to leave on loan. Strange.
