Liverpool were able to clinch a late win in dramatic fashion at Anfield as they opened their Champions League campaign with a 3-2 victory.
The Reds opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Daniel Sturridge headed home Andrew Robertson’s wonderful cross.
It was 2-0 six minutes later when Juan Bernat made an inexcusable foul on Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner slotted home the penalty.
PSG pulled the scoring back to 2-1 soon after, though, as Thomas Meunier’s excellent finish beat Alisson.
Liverpool dominated the second half but couldn’t find the back of the net and they were hit by a sucker punch when Mo Salah’s poor pass lost possession and Kylian Mbappe punished them to make it 2-2.
The game looked to be heading for a 2-2 draw but an amazing piece of skill and finish from substitute Roberto Firmino made it 3-2.
Here are my Liverpool player ratings:
Alisson - 6
Got away with a parry into a dangerous area early on, hardly had anything to do in truth.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7
Had a lot of space on the right and used it pretty well by putting in some excellent crosses.
Joe Gomez - 7
Got a vital toe to the ball in the area as Neymar tried to beat him. Coped pretty well with the PSG attack.
Virgil van Dijk - 6
Had a rare couple of dicey moments as he was forced to foul Kylian Mbappe after missing the ball, before heading a ball straight to the striker instead of clearing. Might have done better for the second goal too as his challenge probably wasn’t strong enough. Made up for it with a good late block from Julian Draxler’s shot.
Andy Robertson - 7
Put in one of the best crosses you’ll ever see to assist Sturridge. Will be disappointed with his part in Meunier’s goal as the ball bounced up off him before the Belgian finished. Did well against Mbappe.
Jordan Henderson - 7
Was very good without the ball, helping the Reds regain possession. Much improved from his game at Leicester.
Georginio Wijnaldum - 8
Won the penalty with some quick feet as he joined in with the attack. Battled hard and looked like one of the best players on the pitch.
James Milner - 9
Set the tone with a crunching tackle on Neymar and continued in that way. Took an expert penalty to make it 2-0. Kept going for 90 minutes as usual. He was unbelievably good once again.
Sadio Mane - 7
Sent Neymar for the paper with a good piece of skill in the first half and looked dangerous. Had a quieter second half.
Mohamed Salah - 4
Not his best game, was sloppy in possession Thought he’d scored but the goal was ruled out for Sturridge’s foul on the goalkeeper. His poor pass led to Mbappe’s goal, and it wasn’t the first poor pass he’d played that out his defence in trouble.
Daniel Sturridge - 7
Hardly had a kick for half an hour but was in the right place at the right time to head home Robertson’s cross. Had a chance before Liverpool’s disallowed goal but fouled the goalkeeper. Had another great chance to score a header on the hour mark but fluffed his lines. Got a good 70 minutes in his legs before he was taken off.
(Sub) Roberto Firmino - 10
Hardly saw him until his goal, which was simply magnificent. Top marks.
