McManaman hails Shaqiri’s influence

Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri has been hailed by former Reds star Steve McManaman.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo, the 46-year-old heaped praise on Shaqiri and explained how he provides the team with an added edge of creativity in the final third.

Shaqiri was signed in a deal believed to be worth just £13 million from Stoke City in the summer following their relegation down to the Championship.

The Switzerland international has impressed since his move and has endeared himself to the Liverpool faithful following a strong start to life at Anfield.

Shaqiri has found the net on two occasions in the Premier League for his new side, with his most recent goal coming in Liverpool’s comfortable win against Fulham.

McManaman discussed the impact that Shaqiri has had since his move to Jurgen Klopp’s side and spoke of how he has been impressed by how he provides Liverpool with something different.

The Reds’ legend said:

He offers that little bit of a creativity in there, doesn’t he? If the front three are not firing or you know, they are just off their game. People keep talking back to [Philippe] Coutinho leaving and where is the creativity coming, and a lot of the midfielders, certainly at this moment in time, are all the same type of midfielders.

The Hendersons, the Milners, the Wijnaldums, even the Keitas to Fabinhos. So I think Shaqiri as a midfielder does offer you something a little bit special. And he’s done really well of late, he’s played really well. You have to remember that he’s only been at a club like Liverpool for three or four months.
