Virgil Van Dijk joins Lovren in spat with Sergio Ramos

Dejan Lovren has been backed by Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk, as the pair continue a spat with Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

The Dutch defender admitted that the Spanish centre back is “not his type of defender”, with the Real Madrid man certainly a controversial figure in football.

Liverpool players and fans felt that the Spaniard purposely injured star Mohamed Salah during last season’s Champions League final, in which the Egyptian had to be subbed off.

Speaking to the  De Telegraaf, Van Dijk said:

He is a great player and I respect what he has achieved but he is not the best, he is not my type of central defender.

Ramos’ team-mate at Real Madrid, Raphael Varane is my favourite. He is an excellent defender and has already won a lot.

I do not know if it was deliberate but mentally something changed when Salah came off,’ the Dutch defender added.

Suddenly, Marcelo, [Karim] Benzema and [Cristiano] Ronaldo all appeared at Trent and released the entire right side. With Salah they never dared to do that.

The match could have been different. I sometimes think about the match but I hope to be in the final again and on the right side of the score.

This followed an Instagram Live stream by Lovren, who called the defender overrated after Croatia beat Spain 3-2 on Thursday night.
