Liverpool are not “a s*** team”, says Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk has tried to put Liverpool’s Champions League struggles into perspective, saying the Reds are not “a s*** team” all of a sudden.

Jurgen Klopp’s men lost 2-1 away to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, leaving their chances of reaching the knockout stages hanging by a thread.

Van Dijk has been defensive of his team, however, and insists they are already focussed on beating Napoli next month:

We don’t need to forget that we played Napoli, one of the best teams in Europe; PSG, one of the favourites to win the Champions League; and obviously the game in Belgrade was not good enough.

We don’t need to (think) we are a s*** team, basically. It can happen. But the frustrating thing is how we conceded the goals and then it’s always difficult to come back.

I don’t know if there’s any explanation for that right now because I can’t think of one, otherwise we should have used it already

But now we need to look forward and the only option for us to qualify is to win against Napoli, no matter what.

Liverpool now switch from Champions League to Premier League commitments, with a huge meeting with Everton looming this weekend.

The Merseyside rivals meet for the 232nd time on Sunday afternoon, with the Reds looking to get back to winnings ways at Anfield.

Klopp’s side face Napoli on December 11th, knowing that only a 1-0 win or a victory by two clear goals will definitely see them progress.
