Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes the Reds’ midfield proved problematic in Sunday’s Merseyside derby.
Jurgen Klopp’s side could only draw 0-0 with Everton at Goodison Park, as their title hopes were dealt a blow.
The performance was never good enough throughout, leading to comparisons between the equally insipid display away to Manchester United.
Liverpool are now one point adrift of Manchester City with nine matches remaining and they are under immense pressure to return to top form.
While the Reds’ attack came in for criticism on Sunday, particularly Mohamed Salah, Souness felt the midfield was the main issue.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the Scot says he admires the players in that area, but says they don’t suit every game as a unit:

I felt Liverpool huffed and puffed for the majority of the game. You have to get more from your midfield in terms of creativity.
We point the finger at the front three when they don’t win games, but I would look further than that.
They have a fabulous midfield and if you are playing in Liverpool’s back four that is the midfield you want, but if you are playing up front then maybe it’s not the midfield you want.
Liverpool have a free midweek, as they prepare for a must-win game at home to Burnley on Sunday.
A more attack-minded midfield is required for that game, with the Clarets likely to come to Anfield to frustrate.
