Liverpool are reportedly ready to make Virgil van Dijk the club’s joint-highest earner by offering a new bumper contract, amidst interest from La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Van Dijk has been a huge influence on Jurgen Klopp’s side since joining from Southampton for £75million last January and is a primary reason behind this season’s impressive Premier League title bid.
According to the Mirror, Liverpool look set to match star forward Mohamed Salah’s current wage of £200,000-a-week with a new deal on the table in an attempt to convince the 27-year-old that his future lies at Anfield.
The Reds paid Van Dijk a £6million signing on fee when he arrived from the South coast at the start of 2018, as well as an upfront loyalty bonus of £5million.
He’ll also receive another loyalty payment of £4million once he’s played 150 games and he’s currently earning just under £125,000-a-week, making the Dutchman the second-highest paid player at the club.
Barcelona and Real are the two outfits said to be circling Van Dijk – it doesn’t come more tempting than that – with the latter set for a major rebuild in the summer following a weak La Liga title challenge and Champions League Round of 16 exit at home to Ajax.
Just 18 months after getting their man though, Liverpool seem to be willing to go to extreme lengths to keep him.
