Van Dijk voted for Sterling to win PFA Player of the Year

Virgil van Dijk has confirmed that he voted for Raheem Sterling to win the PFA Player of the Year award.

The prestigious prize will be awarded later this month, with Sterling a strong contender after a wonderful season at Manchester City.

It is Van Dijk who is odds-on to scoop the award, however, following an almost immaculate campaign at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

The Dutchman is now widely regarded as the world’s best centre-back on current form and he has been the key to the Reds producing such a memorable Premier League title bid.

While some players are occasionally accused of voting against rival players in order to aid their own chances of individual glory, that isn’t the case with Van Dijk.

The towering defender has explained why former Liverpool man Sterling received his vote, admitting other City players were also under consideration:

I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it. He’s had a fantastic season.

I think I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City.

But I am just being honest. I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it.

The nominees for PFA Player of the Year are set to be announced soon, with six players up the prize every season.
