If you’re hoping to see Joe Gomez play for Liverpool again this season you may be left disappointed, with Jurgen Klopp describing the situation as “very difficult.”
The 21-year-old suffered a leg fracture in December and has been recovering on the sidelines since, but returned to the bench on Tuesday night against FC Porto.
Speaking in his press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash with Chelsea, Klopp revealed that as long as his other centre-halves remain fit it’s doubtful Gomez will return to the first-team picture before the end of the season.
Having Joe around is a very difficult situation. He’s a wonderful footballer and needs time so we have to make sure he is 100% fit. If the other boys are fit we can give Joe time to get to full fitness and match practice elsewhere.
There’s no doubting Gomez is the future of Liverpool’s defence, but it’d be risky for Klopp to change things around at this stage, especially considering the form his side are in.
Rushing him back isn’t vital. Joel Matip has shown admirable form alongside Virgil van Dijk and that is most likely to be the partnership the Reds will go with as they pursue the Premier League and Champions League.
