Liverpool great Mark Lawrenson has urged Jurgen Klopp to keep an eye on promising Chelsea defender Reece James this summer.
The highly-rated 19-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal season on loan at Wigan Athletic in the Championship, scooping the club’s Player of the Year award.
Exclusively speaking to Starsport, Lawrenson pinpointed the exciting full-back as a player Klopp could target this summer if he’s looking for low-key deals:
Recruitment is the biggest thing for any club now and I don’t think Klopp will go mad in the transfer market this summer. But I tell you who I’ve seen – and I don’t think they could easily get him – the right-back at Wigan, on loan from Chelsea, Reece James. In that league he makes it look so ridiculously easy. I think he could make the step up. But of course, he belongs to Chelsea at the moment.
James made 46 appearances for the Latics over the 2018-19 season and has since returned to Chelsea to train with the first-team ahead of the Premier League season finale and, of course, Europa League Final in Baku.
He’s thought to be one of the biggest prospects the Blues have in their ranks and is subject of mass interest, it may be unlikely Chelsea will sell though ahead of the club’s transfer ban.
Klopp has spent a lot of money as Liverpool manager in order to turn the club into European heavyweights again, but the captures of Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri provide examples of the shrewd signings he’s made too.
A move for James would be a clever but it remains to be seen whether Chelsea will even consider selling the starlet, nevermind to a Premier League rival.
