Liverpool not involved in next year’s Club World Cup

Liverpool will not be taking part in the Club World Cup, despite winning the Champions League for a sixth time on Saturday night.

An early Mohamed Salah penalty and Divock Origi’s clincher off the bench secured a 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the second all-English European final this week.

Traditionally, the Champions League winners would enter the Club World Cup against other continental cup winners from all over the world.

That won’t be the case for Liverpool though, due to FIFA’s change of format meaning the tournament won’t be back until 2021.

Plans to extend the format from eight teams to 24 were confirmed back in March, with the updated tournament to run from June to July.

It’ll include six teams from South America, three each from Asia, Africa and Central America, one from Oceania plus the Europa League winners, Champions League runner-ups and, of course, the Champions League winners.

The suggestion has been received well and is likely to go through, meaning Liverpool will have to patiently wait if they are to add to their silverware collection after breaking their seven-year wait in Madrid.
