Liverpool’s Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold played a key role in the Reds’ successful campaign under Jurgen Klopp last season, with both showing their defensive and attacking qualities throughout the campaign.
Alexander-Arnold’s crossing ability has led to comparisons with former England captain David Beckham, with the right-back providing 16 assists in all competitions.
Left-back Robertson meanwhile also enjoyed a standout campaign at Anfield, proving a real fan favourite with his tireless work rate which helped the Reds to a sixth European title.
However, cover for the pair appears to be fairly limited.
Joe Gomez and James Milner are able to slot in and cover Alexander-Arnold on the right-side, with out of favour right-back Nathaniel Clyne looking likely to depart the club this summer.
Meanwhile, second choice left-back Alberto Moreno looks set to leave Anfield when his deal expires next month.
Klopp looks set to bolster his full-back options ahead of the new season, so we’ve taken a look at three right-backs and three left-backs the German could decide to pursue this summer.
Dominican Republic-born left-back Firpo excelled for Real Betis last season in Spain. The 22-year-old could be the perfect option to cover Robertson next season and would have no issues settling into Klopp’s attacking system.
Versatile Fulham teenager Sessegnon could be another option for Klopp as a left-back or a left winger this summer. The 19-year-old looks set to leave Fulham, however, the Reds will have to defeat Tottenham once again if they are to secure Sessegnon’s services ahead of the new season.
Leeds’ Davis has been tipped as a future star and could be a shrewd option for the Reds. The 19-year-old joined the Whites from Morecambe last year and was a regular in the matchday squad under Marcelo Bielsa last season. The teenager would more than likely be open to a move to Anfield and could showcase his talents on the Reds’ domestic cup competitions to cover Robertson.
Experienced right-back Caligiuri may well be keen on leaving Schalke this summer following the arrival of Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny. The 31-year-old would provide solid cover to the impressive Alexander-Arnold next season and could help the England international further his development.
Another option with plenty of experience, Borussia Dortmund’s Piszczek could be keen on a reunion with Jurgen Klopp at Anfield. The 34-year-old appears to have a few seasons left before retiring and is out of contract with the Bundesliga giants next summer, so could be available for a relatively low fee.
Swiss right-back Mbabu has excelled in his native country for Young Boys over the past two years and appears to be ready to join a bigger side. The 24-year-old would have no problems adapting to Jurgen Klopp’s system, however, the dynamic defender may be the most expensive of the three options.
