There is no doubt that Virgil van Dijk has had an incredible year with Liverpool. His defensive ability helped them finish as runners up in the Premier League and win the Champions League trophy.
According to AS, ex-Chelsea man Ruud Gullit, who was speaking at a golf event, has told the centre-back exactly where to improve in order to also win the Ballon d’Or this year or in the future.
Van Dijk needs to improve for his international side, the Netherlands, in order to win the award that has not been won by a defender since 2006, according to Gullit.
For the national team I still think he needs to be better than that.
Van Dijk puts in strong performances for his Liverpool side and the Netherlands, but according to Gullit, the Dutch shouldn’t be conceding one or two goals every game when he plays how he does for Liverpool.
If you have such a good defence you don’t need to concede these goals all the time.
Van Dijk is among the favourites to win the award this year after having an extremely impressive season, but it will be hard for the defender when you’re in competition with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
