Joe Gomez returned to pre-season early in bid to regain his place

As he was part of England’s squad for the Nations League in June, Joe Gomez was offered the chance to take an extended break before returning to pre-season, but he declined and decided to come back early.

Gomez was in terrific form at the start of last season and was one of Liverpool’s shining lights, up until he suffered a fractured leg against Burnley at Turf Moor.

Joel Matip came into the side and performed really well, meaning there is now a serious competition to see who can secure the second place in Liverpool’s centre-back duo, alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Gomez, in an interview with the official Liverpool website, admitted that he’d been working on his fitness over the off-season, and that showed as he finished second in the lactate test that the players performed on their first day back. Only James Milner, known as the fittest player in the squad, finished ahead of Gomez, who is keen to get his place back in the team.
