Whilst some of Liverpool’s star players are still away on extended breaks after competing around the globe in international tournaments, others are now back at Melwood and are into their pre-season training.
The Reds’ latest session took place on Tuesday morning and here are the things we learned as the European champions were put through their paces.
Shaq not back yet
One player who did not feature in the ball-work session was Xherdan Shaqiri. He’s returned from international duty with a torn calf injury and he’ll be out of action for a few weeks.
Lovren returns for fitness testing
Tuesday saw Dejan Lovren return to pre-season. He wasn’t involved in the session but he did get put through his paces in the testing drills.
Return of an icon
The last time Divock Origi was on a football pitch for Liverpool, he was scoring the goal that secured the Reds a sixth European Cup. He was given an extra few days off after being part of the Belgium squad in June but he returned to outdoor Melwood and did his fitness testing with Lovren. There has been talk of Origi leaving but Liverpool will be glad that he’s still at the club for pre-season.
Rhian Brewster looked sharp
Rarely has a player who hasn’t kicked a ball for Liverpool been given as much hype and airtime as Rhian Brewster. However, the striker is now fully fit and looking to impress and he looked very, very sharp on Tuesday.
Lallana and Milner still a step above
Whilst there were a lot of young players at the session, both Adam Lallana and James Milner still looked a class above in terms of fitness and work rate. Both are true professionals who set a great example.
