Klopp reveals Glatzel knee injury is ‘serious’

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed Paul Glatzel suffered a “serious” knee injury in Liverpool’s 6-0 pre-season opening win at annual opponents Tranmere Rovers.

The 18-year-old striker was introduced at half-time but had to leave the field on 78 minutes after suffering what looked to be an issue with his knee.

Klopp has now confirmed Liverpool will be assessing his injury to determine how long he could be facing on the sidelines, telling the official club website:

Unfortunately, Paul Glatzel got seriously injured, which is a shame. He is a wonderful kid, a wonderful player, unbelievable. The week we saw him [at Melwood] helped already, so when he is back he will be one of my boys because I really like what I saw.

It’s clear Klopp thinks highly of Glatzel and the injury comes at a really unfortunate time, handing a blow to his chances of impressing the German manager this season.

He netted 23 goals in 38 games for both the U23s and U18s last term and starred in the FA Youth Cup Final where Liverpool defeated Manchester City on penalties.

It’s very unlikely he’ll be fit for the start of the new season though, unless Klopp was simply fearing the worst.
